Finest TV Choices: Seven Essential Motion Pictures This Week
Highlighted Choice
The Substance
Coralie Fargeat's bold commentary addresses the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics and the feared consequences of ageing. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents a brilliant performance as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress demoted to starring in an aerobics show on TV. Edged out due to her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a mysterious and horrifying process known as the Substance. This produces a youthful duplicate called Sue, leading to a progressively vampiric relationship between the two. Friday 17 October, Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10
This suspenseful story includes the talented actress as Laura, an ace reporter who opts for some time off from reporting on international wars to join a high-end voyage with an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her partner, as well as other filthy rich guests. However when an unknown lady disappears from the ship one night and the entire crew denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Available now, on Netflix
This Supernatural Story
Steven Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills through this nifty supernatural story shot entirely through the eyes of the phantom. When a household featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the lens – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems aware of the supernatural presence, and it looks like defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, including a revelation you might not see coming. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image through this autobiographical spoof. He plays a self-obsessed film star named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a lucrative offer to visit a celebration in Mallorca for the wealthy superfan Javi. Contacted by the intelligence agency to investigate the alleged criminal, the actor's unconventional method is put to the test. This Saturday, 9pm, on Channel 4
The Black Phone
Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well even without a sequel. Set in 1978 Denver, multiple kidnappings has left the local kids frightened. Once Finney is taken by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a cellar, he anticipates the worst. However, the old telephone in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, as the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for Mammon in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who proclaims initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence profiting from the people's religious faith. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and insincerity, yet Chastain manages to depict the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, on Film4
Black Bag
The current week's another release from the filmmaker presents a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars worn by Fassbender's UK spy. His assignment is to identify a mole within their ranks from a group of five – one of whom is his own wife. Each performer excel of understated style, resulting in an engaging psychological game of deception or honesty unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the intelligent intelligence fun. This Friday, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
