Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical body horror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.
